Be kind to each other |
This video speaks volumes without saying a word.If you are treating someone poorly for being different than you, reconsider your actions. Be better than that. Think of the small child that lives in each of us. The part of us that is just wants to fit in, not be noticed, be anonymous, be liked, and needs friends. Many don't experience the bullying to a large extent, but we've all been insulted or embarrassed. Imagine if you heard some insult about yourself so often......that you started to believe it yourself.
We are all trying to figure out who we are and who we want to be. We are all frightened. Be gentle with each other. I promise you will never regret it. |
Being Bullied in School?Have a quick look at Rick Mercer's Youtube Rant on the right.
All I can say is.....he's bang on with this report. All of the bullies I knew aren't doing so hot as adults, but the unique people who've brought something different to the world and are now confident enough to share it....well, they're running things. So, I guess there's two things here. First, if you're down because of how some ignorant people treat you, just have patience. You are growing stronger every day. You just don't realize it in the moment, but you will. Second, if you are someone who degrades someone to make yourself look better, just stop. It's not winning you friends like you think. In truth, you are losing the respect of your peers. Act so you'll be proud of yourself when you think back to high school. |

Let's talk LITERACY for a moment
Many people think about literacy as a "either" or type of thing. Either you can read, or you can't. Well, it's just not that simple. Literacy itself is a complicated concept, which involves all of the various methods of communicating, not just reading.
As far as the reading component of literacy goes, not everyone has had the same experiences, teachers, or opportunities. I wish someone would have given me a few tools to use when I was younger.
At the heart of this lies the question, "WHY BOTHER?"..........That's a great question. I have a question for you as well. Wouldn't school be more interesting if you could routinely pick out something from what you are reading that is actually interesting to you? Wouldn't it make that thing, whatever it might be, seem more meaningful if it was written in your own words?
If you'd like to get better, improve your skills, infuse text with personal meaning, there are ways to do this. A big part of learning is simply wanting to learn. However, I will provide you with a few tools that are going to make a difference.

Always remember to Z.A.P. whatever you are reading!
What does ZAP stand for you ask?
ZAP is a tool you can use to make sure you actually understand the content, making it less likely that you'll have to cram and memorize individual facts for a test score. ZAP will help you make connections within the content and between the content and what you already know, building knowledge rather than short-term memory.
Z = Zone into something interesting in the text.
A = Add your own thoughts to the information. What do you know already that relates to the concept?
P = Put it down in your own words. That way, you'll be using a vocabulary that is all your own.
