Earth Under Water
Save the Experimental Lakes
The experimental lakes area (ELA) near Kenora, Ontario plays a vital role in helping understand the effects of pollution and climate change. These isolated lakes sitting atop the Canadian Shield provide the perfect opportunity to conduct research that would otherwise be impossible to conduct in a natural environment. We are now at a critical time in human history, and the need to understand the consequences of human actions has never been more important.
The Canadian Government, under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, has elected to close the Experimental Lakes Area to further research. Skeptics point to a very pro-economic growth stance, and complete disregard for essential environmental issues.

Pyramid of BiomassThe organisms that make up lower levels of the food chain may be smaller in size, but because of larger numbers, they weigh more than the organisms which feed on them.
|
Pyramid of EnergyAs an organism feeds on another, energy conversion occurs. During this process, 90% of the energy is lost. That is to say that only 10% of the energy in plants is captured by the primary consumers that feed on them. Following this, only 10% of that is captured by the secondary consumers that feed on the primary consumers, and so on.
This occurs at each trophic level, making it a much more efficient use of energy to eat at a lower trophic level. |
