Isolating Variables - How To
This video is fairly well done, the language used is generally solid, and students will find it helpful. The one exception to that rule occurs when the instructor says "subtract by", which is confusing because the terminology for subtraction is "subtract from", while the terminology for division is "divide by".
Isolating Variables - Solutions
Let's Make a Deal! (Unit pricing) - June 5
In today's world, a lot of the goods we purchase are sold in groups or bunches. A dozen Coca-Cola cans, 24 rolls of toilet paper, 6 granola bars. Sometimes, even items you'd normally purchase individually could go on sale, or cost less if you purchase them in "multiples". To help you get more for your money, you'll need to learn how to figure out how to compare prices effectively.
Your job today is to figure out which deal is best. You can accomplish this by determining the "unit price" in each case. The Unit Price is simply the cost per individual unit (item). The "unit" can refer to a single item, or it could be calculated per millilitre, per litre, per gram, etc.
Once you've calculated how much each item , you'll be able to compare how much one "unit" costs for each of the different sales prices.
Watch the video example and then perform the same calculations on the two worksheets provided in the image gallery on the right.
Lastly, record a short video of your work, explaining your thinking.

June 2 - Writing Equations and Solving Math Mobiles
Remember that horizontal lines mean that the shapes on each end "weigh" the same. They are in balance. When writing equations, we can think of the two ends being equal (=). Also, when writing equations, each shape can be described by a lower case letter (eg. a square could be represented by an "s", a circle by a "c". We've done these multiple times throughout the year, but I'll provide an example below to remind you. Post a video on FlipGrid of your work! Problem solving marks and Equation writing marks are on the table. Good luck!
Try these!!! You'll need to scroll down to see all of them. |

May 15 - Manipulating information through graphing
Graphing is a useful technique to present a lot of data visually. It often helps the viewer make sense of information.
However, it is possible to mislead someone by misrepresenting the data.
The scale on the y-axis can be manipulated to make a small difference in numbers seem big by using a little interruption symbol, called a "scale break" to skip a bunch of numbers.
In other cases, the scale on the y-axis may be inappropriately large, causing the values to appear to be small & quite similar, essentially reducing a rather large difference to one that appears small.
Watch the video here and try these techniques out on your own bar graph.
Task #1: Create a line graph of some data (made up by you) that misleads the reader by making a small difference seem big.
If you can't think of a topic, compare the number of minutes spent doing homework by 5 classmates.
Task #2: Create a line graph some different data that mislead the reader by making a big difference seem small.
If you can't think of a topic, compare the average speeds of 5 vehicles on the highway.
Video & explain!

Quartering the Cross - Challenge
The challenge is to shade these 5 squares such that exactly one quarter of the area is shaded. Some are simple, but coming up with uniquely different ways in which to do it will push you into many different mathematical concepts. Moving between quarters, eighths, and sixteenths seamlessly while adding and subtracting shaded areas between the 5 squares can produce some very interesting patterns. Give it a try.
